ASC Statement on the Release of President Biden’s FY23 Budget

The proposed budget includes $1.34 billion in funding for AmeriCorps, a 16% increase over FY22.

Washington, DC (April 1, 2022) — For nearly 30 years, AmeriCorps members have served their communities, providing important support in education, disaster response, environmental resilience, healthcare, and much more. Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, AmeriCorps programs have expanded and pivoted their services to address the many challenges of the last two years, and AmeriCorps members have served in many crucial areas including public health outreach, COVID-19 testing, educational support and mentoring for students, and filling staff shortages in schools.

Earlier this week, President Biden released his Budget for FY23, which proposes $1.34 billion for the AmeriCorps agency — a 16% increase from FY22 — that would enable progress toward greater equity in national service by increasing AmeriCorps member benefits, unite Americans in service and volunteerism, help to address climate resilience, and prioritize member recruitment along with better stewardship of federal resources.

America’s Service Commissions (ASC) is thankful to the Biden-Harris Administration for this recognition of the value of national service to meet our nation’s most difficult challenges and provide much needed resources on the local and state levels. ASC is also pleased the Biden-Harris Administration continues to show support for the expansion of climate resilience efforts through national service.

“National service and AmeriCorps are bipartisan initiatives, with deep support from elected officials across the political spectrum,” said Kaira Esgate, ASC CEO. “ASC looks forward to working with congressional leaders to consider the President’s FY23 Budget and secure important and much-needed additional investments in national service. AmeriCorps members do so much for our communities, and increased funding for AmeriCorps and national service would allow them to meet even more needs in the years to come.”

In addition, ASC continues to encourage the passage of a budget reconciliation package that encompasses many national service priorities and would provide a pathway to expanding national service and the path to good paying jobs on a broader scale and making AmeriCorps accessible for all who wish to serve.
