State Service Commissioner EngagementWe at ASC love to engage with state service commissioners. Below are a variety of ways commissioners can connect with ASC and the service network. Leadership Convening brings together executive directors and commissioners (chairs or their designee) from state and territorial service commissions across the country to discuss high-level trends and developments, revisit strategic goals, report on association progress, and foster cross-state collaboration and best practice sharing. Leadership Convening is typically held over two days in Washington, DC in February each year, with Hill Day taking place the day before as an optional opportunity to engage with elected officials. Registration information is sent directly to commission executive directors.
ASC has a variety of committees, composed of Board members and other commission representatives, that guide our work. If you are interested in joining a committee, please contact ASC CEO Kaira Esgate at [email protected].
States for Service (S4S) is ASC’s privately funded, grassroots policy arm. Composed of service commissions; AmeriCorps, AmeriCorps Seniors, and Volunteer Generation Fund programs; volunteer engagement professionals; and individual alums and champions, the S4S coalition works to reinforce the critical role service commissions play in developing and advancing service in states and territories to meet community needs. S4S aims to influence policy, grant, and regulatory issues related to state and territorial service commissions and AmeriCorps programs.
The ASC Board of Directors provides oversight and counsel on planning and policy development, financial oversight, and resource development, as well as associated member services. Current ASC Bylaws allow for a total of 25 Board members, which should include a mix of staff members employed by state service commissions as well as commissioners. ASC typically recruits new board members in May and June each year. If you are interested in applying to join ASC's board, contact ASC CEO Kaira Esgate at [email protected].
ASC typically highlights one commissioner each month on our social media channels, on our website, and in our monthly newsletter. If you would like to be highlighted, please complete our commissioner highlight submission form to share a photo of yourself as well as information about how long you've been serving as a commissioner and why you serve.
ASC posts regularly on our social media channels with updates and other information pertinent to the national service field. Follow us to stay engaged: ASC on Facebook, ASC on Instagram, ASC on LinkedIn, and ASC on X.
At least once per year, ASC prepares letters of support for AmeriCorps that are shared with members of Congress to help encourage robust funding. Commissioners are asked to sign on to these letters to show bipartisan, national support for AmeriCorps. Letters are usually shared with commission executive directors for distribution to commissioners.
Twice each year ASC hosts a webinar series for new commissioners or those looking for a refresher. The series includes National Service 101 and Commissioner Roles and Responsibilities. Contact ASC CEO Kaira Esgate at [email protected] for more information.
These quarterly calls are an opportunity for youth commissioners to connect, share, and learn with other youth commissioners across the country. Contact Alli Zuel at [email protected] for more information.
In recent years, ASC has held a Youth Commissioner Convening as a pre-event to our annual Leadership Convening. Funded by the Allstate Foundation, this event offers an in-person opportunity for youth commissioners to network and learn together. Registration information is shared directly with commission executive directors.
