New Toolkits Available to Boost Afterschool Program Development

Dear Friends and Partners,

I hope this finds you staying well and safe as the 2021-2022 school year begins.

We are thrilled to share with you two exciting new publications from America’s Service Commissions (ASC) that may be helpful to you and your programs and partners this year.

These two guides were developed with generous financial support from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation to provide the afterschool field with fresh ideas on how AmeriCorps members and national service can strengthen afterschool programs to create positive community change. The toolkits showcase easy-but-innovative ways that AmeriCorps members can make a positive impact in afterschool settings, along with resources and case studies to help maximize out-of-school time impact in communities and schools through the power of national service. I am also pleased to share results from our multi-year initiative to expand afterschool opportunities through AmeriCorps, thanks to support from the Mott Foundation from 2017-2021.

ASC received a $250,000 grant from the foundation and selected 11 different state service commissions to receive grants in order to form partnerships with statewide afterschool networks and to develop, support, and sustain quality afterschool and summer learning opportunities for children and youth. The 11 states receiving funding included: Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Rhode Island, Utah, Washington, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

As a result of these commissions’ hard work, the funding provided to participating states resulted in 15 new AmeriCorps grants being awarded to afterschool initiatives over two years - including six new planning grants and nine new operational AmeriCorps State/National grants. In addition, 100% of participating state commissions reported new outreach and technical assistance activities to expand the quality and quantity of afterschool programming in their state that will continue beyond the grant period.

If you have questions or would like to receive a hard copy of our afterschool toolkits, please email us.

Thank you for your support!
